Flashback: An Ordinary Heart by Emmylou Harris from Happy, Texas

For the 2 – almost 3 – weeks, I have been suffering from a serious case of Writer’s Block. I know for someone who’s aspiring to be a writer, not actually a writer, this is a serious handicap. When you have so many things to say, to share, but the right words never ever seem right enough. So, I looked for inspirations in other places – old books, movies, videos on Youtube, songs and lately, TV serials. And as anyone can see, I still have to find one.

But I did notice one thing. Whenever any filmmaker – TV or movies – runs out of ideas on how to progress the story further, they add a weird flashback scene, till he (or she) can find their remaining story. Today, in absence of anything decent to write about, I too am going about my own flashback story. It is not much of a story, as miswritten lyrics of ‘Ordinary Heart’ by Emmylou Harris, from Happy, Texas.

A few years, when I was living with my grandparents for a while, I saw “Happy, Texas” on cable and somehow, immediately took a liking for the song that plays in the background when Joe thinks she is watching “David” and “Steven” making out, when in reality it’s Harry and Wayne planning the heist. And somehow feels heartbroken and the background singer goes “An Ordinary Heart comes in plain brown wrapper…” and I knew I had to find it. At that time, I could only find these miswritten lyrics to the song.

These are the lyrics that inspired me once, I hope they will work their magic again

An ordinary heart comes in a plain brown wrapper,
Believing in hopes and dreams and happy ever after.
Someone to love is all that really matters to a heart,
An ordinary heart.

An ordinary heart comes with a door that never closes.
Though it's gathering more than its share of thorns among the roses,
It will tell you that's just the price that life imposes on a heart,
An ordinary heart.

An ordinary heart could make an art of anything,
Pretend or break, mend or ache, forgive and live to sing.
An ordinary heart is just a diamond in the rough.
A diamond after all is made of ordinary stuff.

Memories of lines in rhymes and old love letters,
Moments that shine in time and beats and measures,
No shrine of gold could hold the finer treasures of a heart
An ordinary heart.

An ordinary heart could make an art of anything,
Pretend or break, mend or ache, forgive and live to sing.
An ordinary heart is just a diamond in the rough.
A diamond after all is made of ordinary stuff.

These are, of course, the wrong lyrics. The correct lyrics are:

An ordinary heart comes in a plain brown wrapper
Believe'n in hopes & dreams & happy ever after
Someone to love is all that really matters
To a heart, an ordinary heart

An ordinary heart comes with a door that never closes
Tho it's gathered more than it's share of thorns among the roses
It would tell you that's just the price that life imposes on a heart,
An ordinary heart

An ordinary heart may not be the jewel in the crown
But It's the only thing you can count on when the chips are down
An ordinary heart is a diamond in the rough
A diamond after all is just made of ordinary stuff

After all this time you think it would know better
Still reading between the lines of old love letters
But nothing is lost once it becomes a treasure of a heart,
An ordinary heart

An ordinary heart it came in a plain brown wrapper
Believe'n in hopes & dreams & happy ever after
Someone to love was all that really mattered
To a heart, this ordinary heart
